The causes of vibration white finger

By Larry Bennett

Vibration white finger is a disorder which is common in people who work in jobs where their hands and fingers are subjected to prolonged and heavy vibrations. These vibrations are extremely damaging to the blood vessels in the fingers and sometimes the fingers will go into spasm and they aren't able to get as much blood as they usually would. When this occurs the fingers can also go very cold and numb and the person can lose feeling in them entirely. Vibration white finger is only common in people in a few jobs, but they all have one thing in common.

All jobs where vibration white finger is common involve the use of vibrating machinery which is controlled using the hands and fingers. Some of the most common positions where it is found are people who work in mines, people who work in road maintenance and people who work in construction. These jobs involve the use of pneumatic drills and other heavy vibrating machines.

There are a number of other positions where vibration white finger is a risk too. People who work in textiles and clothing which use sewing machines can get it because of the sewing machine vibrations. Tree surgeons can also be at risk because they have to use chainsaws. The risk to these people is much lesser though because the level of use is not as high.

Once someone has vibration white finger, the only way to get rid of it is to completely stop using the initial cause. Even if a person does this straight away however, there is still a good chance that the condition will not subside. Changes in temperature can cause vibration white finger to worsen and cold temperatures even further restrict the blood flow.

There are other things which can add to the development of vibration white finger but they do not cause it by themselves. If a person already suffers from the condition, stress and smoking can become triggers to set off the spasms, numbness and discolouration.
