Characteristically when we imagine a caveman, we see clubs, animal skins, and long straggly hair. But we never think about caveman's diet and how it primarily consisted of healthy and pure foods.

Exceptionally fit and athletic people in numerous ways, the caveman lived prior to the agricultural age. They walked for long distances to hunt for game animals and gather fruits, berries and nuts. They would relocate from one location to another whenever food became scarce in order to find better provisions.

It is possible that the Paleolithic diet (Paleo diet) is the oldest diet in existence. The cultivation of wheat and other plants did not begin until about 10,000 years ago. The Paleolithic Era ended approximately 20,000 years ago. It is easy to comprehend why people have such digestive troubles with the grains, legumes, and dairy products that weren't accessible during the Paleolithic Era because genes take hundreds of thousands of years to become accustomed to a person's metabolism and physiology to different lifestyles.

The Paleolithic diet calls for eliminating all packaged and processed foods. These types of foods comprise all wheat and cereal grains, bagels, breads, pastry, donuts, cookies, crackers, etc. All of these types of foods were not available during the days of the caveman. Because the caveman did not have dairy products to eat, the Paleolithic diet eliminates foods like milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc. Still, that does not imply that you are out of food choices. Cavemen ate a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, they ate a lot of animal protein.

The cavemen consumed lean cuts of meat and the animals it came from were clearly not given a diet of hormones. It is important that on the Paleo diet, you eat meat that come from animals that were grass and pasture fed. Lean cuts of meat consist of chuck steak, London broil, lean pork, pork chops, pork loin, flank steak, top sirloin steak and lean beef as long as all of the visible fat is removed. You can also eat extra-lean hamburgers as long as they contain no more than 7 percent fat. You can eat poultry like chicken breast, game-hem breast, and turkey breast. In addition, you can eat some types of organ meats like beef, lamb, pork, and chicken livers. Plus, if you're up for it, try eating beef, lamb, and pork tongues. Cavemen also ate eggs, so feel free to eat eggs as long as you limit yourself to a maximum of six eggs a week.

On the Paleolithic diet your body is given a chance to absorb nutrients more effectively. You are able to provide your body with a more balanced array of vitamins and minerals. Also, filling your diet with fresh plants and lean meat slows your body's digestive process down, which achieves two things. One, a slow digestive process preserves a level blood sugar level; and, a slower digestive process means that your appetite is regulated; you stay fuller for a longer period of time, reduce the amount that you eat and more importantly, reduce how much you over eat.
