Male Hormones

By Anju Mathur, MD

Traditionally only women were considered when the decrease of hormones in the body brought about by advancing age resulted in low libido, decrease of muscle mass, hair loss and wrinkly skin. But these symptoms happen to men, too, so if the remedy for women is replacement hormones, why not for men?

The reason only women were considered is because men remain fertile long after the reproductive possibility has disappeared for women. Yet, hormone production still declines in men as the body ages, and what man wants to be a bald, sexless, wrinkly weakling?

Male bodies begin to decrease hormone production in when the body ages beyond the age of 30. In some it is more pronounced than others. As age increases, the production of hormones dwindles on a gradient. Not only physical appearance is affected, but also physical and mental well being.

These things are important to men as well as women - who wouldn't want to feel and appear younger? And recent research has shown that hormone replacement can benefit men just as much as women.

Of course, when you think of male hormones, the one that comes to mind is testosterone. But other hormones play a big role in maintaining youthfulness for men as well as women. Some of the other necessary hormones are growth hormone, thyroid hormone and even estrogen and progesterone.

To begin a hormone replacement program, the first thing to be done is medical testing, to find out which hormones are lacking and in what amount. Replacement with bioidentical (which means the hormones used as replacement are the same as the ones lost, not synthetic) hormones in specific amounts for each individual will then be prescribed by a doctor.

There are a lot of remedies for the signs of age on the market - through the ages one can find things like hair replacement, Dr. Hustler's Medicine Show tonic (cocaine? Alcohol? It probably did make some feel youthful for a while) or extract of goat testicles (yes! It has been done!). But there are only three tested therapies which actually produce the desired results: diet and exercise along with hormone replacement.

If you have concerns about the ravages of age and a desire for more youthful energy, do something about it. Skip the medicine show, and realize the cause of the problems is dwindling hormones. Handling the problem at its source will give you lifetime benefits.
