The Common Signs And Symptoms Of Meningitis

The membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord are called meninges. The condition which causes inflammation these films is known as meningitis. This inflammation occurs due to infection from either viruses or bacteria. It can also occur as an allergic reaction to taking certain drugs. There are many signs and symptoms of meningitis.

This disease can be life threatening depending on the closeness of the infection to either the brain or the spinal cord. This condition is known as a medical emergency. Therefore, anyone who has the following indicators should seek medical advice as soon as possible.

The most common indications of a patient ill with this disease is nuchal rigidity. This in layman language is the stiffness of the neck. The patients may also complain nausea and actual vomiting. The patient may also suffer from sleepiness and confusion.

High fevers are a common complaint of patients diagnosed with this ailment. This is the increase in the normal body temperature of the patient. The patient may suffer from hallucinations and being delirious if the indications are left untreated for a long time. They may also complain of dizziness and confusion.

One of the most obvious symptoms that one should always look for is intolerance to loud noises as well as not being able to stand bright light. The patient may also complain of nausea, and drowsiness. Furthermore, the patient may suffer bouts of vomiting.

Parents of infants should check for swelling of the soft spot that is on the head of the baby. Since the infant cannot say when they are hurting, symptoms such as headaches, fever and a stiff neck are not helpful. The parent should instead look for other signs such as irritability, poor feeding and vomiting.

Special care must be taken if the patient is an infant. This is due to the fact that they cannot talk hence cannot complain of the obvious symptoms such as headaches and fevers, the parent should carefully examine the infant for other symptoms such as swelling of the fontanelle.
