Do you want to lower you chances of colon cancer, how about breast cancer, what about diabetes, or osteoporosis and fragility? No one wants to be home in bed sick or stuck in a hospital plugged up with tubes yet I wonder if we realize some of our actions are doing just that- making us sick.
The theme presented by U.S. Administration on Aging, has chosen, You Are Never To Old To Play! The focuses this month and throughout the year is how older Americans played in their youth and have carried on these traditions through their children and grandchildren, and what can be done today to keep these traditions alive. Communities around the nation are creating an intergenerational month of play where each day should be focused on the health and wellbeing of seniors everywhere.
Being old does not mean being dead, in fact I never say the word old unless I'm talking about a wine or cheese, and that is something wonderful in deed. So many people when they reach 65 complain they are old, why does a number on a calendar have to suddenly make you old? It is also confusing to me as to why so many people give up living an active life just because they are up there in years. "You can sleep when you dead," is my motto but not all seniors are as enthusiastic as me.
Dr. JoAnne E. Manson published in The New England Journal of Medicine her findings that among 73,743 initially healthy women ages 50 to 79, walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, as well as more vigorous exercise, substantially reduced the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events.
The research has been done, scientific studies prove healthy benefits from exercise and yet we still are a sedentary people, why? Fear is a major factor for some, family's history, abuse, mental issues...there are many reasons why, the key is to move beyond what limitations you have set for you self and move ahead.
Yoga is probably one of the best ways to start "exercising" because this can be done anywhere, and at any pace you can best handle; because it deals with a mind body connection it will help you over come the reasons you have not exercised in the first place, such as fear and or other limits you have placed on yourselves. Yoga is also a form of exercise that can be done alone, which is especially nice as it allows you to be with your emotions as you move forward. Walking also has these same benefits if you allow yourself to be in the moment.
After making a mind-body connection you will be ready to move forward as to what you want to achieve and how; this would be a good time to set some goals, and if possible meet with your doctor to help set you in the right direction. Then give your self permission to move forward, knowing there may be some set backs and that is ok.
