Dietary Habits and Tooth Color

By Shaun P. Reily

If you drink a lot of carbonated beverages or coffee, or are a smoker, you've probably seen a decline in the condition of your teeth over the years. Particularly a loss of their original radiance.

There are, however, several methods available to you to begin improving your dental health and restoring the natural white shine of your smile.

Your first step to a whiter smile will require disciplining yourself to hold off on some of those fixes you may have developed into long-term habits. Try drinking water as often as possible in place of the usual soda or coffee and have a few less cigarettes a day if you are a smoker. You will also need to avoid excessively acidic foods as much as possible.

Calcium and Vitamin C will need to be added to your diet if they are not already in sufficient quantities. Aside from being a powerful anti-oxidant, Vitamin C is also a very effective natural whitening agent when consumed in the form of citrus fruits. Calcium from milk or supplements of course strengthens bones and teeth.

Also very important is that you make flossing a daily ritual if it is not already. Untold damage is done to your teeth by any food left between them that is allowed to decay.

If you go the route of professional dentist teeth restoration you will have a couple procedures to choose from. With one procedure your teeth are restored to a dazzling white by first removing a tiny portion of the natural protective layer around all of your teeth. The natural coating of your teeth is then replaced with an artificial layer of white resin which creates a very strong and seamless bond.

The other method available from your dentist is known as veneer bonding. In this method instead of replacing the natural coating with resin, the teeth are simply covered over completely with porcelain implants. These sheets of porcelain provide perfectly white teeth and a picture-perfect smile. They are also durable enough to last for up to five years which justifies the enormous price difference.

Regardless of your choice of teeth whitening solution, your main goal should be improving your overall health with the diet changes discussed above. The dentist whitening options will provide immediate results, but your health will provide lasting ones.

You should consider incorporating lots of helpful fruits and vegetables such as apples, celery, broccoli, spinach and carrots into your diet to build the foundation of a healthier body and teeth.
