Panic attacks, which incidentally are much the same as anxiety attack, will come quickly, and with a vengeance. They will strike you totally out of the blue. If you have had one I'm sure you pray you don't get another. Well your prayers could be about to come true.
Completely Out Of The Blue
My wife was hit with a very severe panic attack while she was driving the car. As you can imagine it could have resulted in a nasty end for us both. After she, and me to be honest, got over the shock we did what everybody does. Went to see our doctor.
We got a standard lesson on the facts. Nothing to worry about, never in any real danger etc etc. Then we got a prescription for beta blockers. I'm using the term "we" here as I felt as much part of it as my wife did. The drugs would (he promised) stop her heart from racing at the onset of an attack, thus stopping the attack. All good in theory.
We tentatively went out in the car again and sure enough at the same junction my wife started to feel an attack coming on. Basically she had a panic attack while the drugs kept her heart rate slower. She said this was worse than before. Full blown panic yet her heart never even got into second gear.
Best Place For Drugs...The Trash
We trashed the beta blockers as soon as we got safely home. My wife suffered for about nine months not being able to get behind the wheel. She had mixed feelings about it because she didn't suffer panic attacks when she wasn't driving.
We couldn't let this situation go on. Her not being able to drive for fear of having an attack at the wheel. I did some in depth research on the web and we came across various techniques to try. Which we did with varying results. Nothing really did the trick of stopping them completely.
We Tried Everything...& Then Some
I came across yet another "system" that claimed to be a magic bullet. As we had tried everything we found so far we tried this also. Initial results were ok. We knew any success was because of the method and not the drugs, which she wasn't taking. The first attempt at driving and she got the overwhelming senses of an attack coming. She put the system into gear and managed to come out unscathed. So far so good.
We had a chat later and she reported she definitely had an attack. But using the methods she was able to tone it down considerably. Just knowing she had been able to lower the intensity was a huge boost in itself. She now felt the power within herself to stop the next attack dead. She didn't quite manage this.
Little By Little
But she did manage to decrease it effect. Each and every time she felt an attacking growing she decreased its effects. Pretty quickly she got to the stage where she can recognise the signs and stop it dead in its tracks.
If you feel overwhelmed by these sudden attacks you have the choice to do nothing, or seek medical help in the form of drugs from your doctor. Either way there's a good chance you won't get better any time soon.
