Hypnosis - Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It

By Sarah Cox

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of several misconceptions created by popular imagination. Some believe them to be some type of spell while others refuse to even acknowledge them. Following are some of the well known misconceptions about hypnosis and the reality behind them.

Hypnosis has no connection with any sort of dark arts. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants effectively undergoing it in public sessions. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to resist the spell.

Another belief is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on around him. That individual is just in a relaxed state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily.

Some scientific discoveries have stated that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Although, the research has some element of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers used the identical hypnosis technique for everyone. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable solution as different individuals fall under different character types, and therefore respond to different techniques.

Meditation and hypnosis are often thought to be the same by people. However, meditation is a purely personal feeling that has got nothing to do with communication, whereas communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind devoid of any communication, whereas communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis technique.

It is commonly believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in appearance or in patterns of conduct of an individual. Hypnosis is clearly not wizardry that it can transform the physique of an individual on its own. But it can bring about a development in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and hence one should not pay heed to the myths, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
