Important Facts About Primary Lymphedema Treatment

By Peter Hodges

There are two types of lymphedema, primary and secondary. Primary lymphedema is when the patient is born with the condition where as secondary lymphedema is developed usually through some form of damage to the lymphatic system such as trauma or surgery. Primary lymphedema is most common in women and it can also be termed as a genetic condition that could get serious if not treated well and in time. Although there is no cure for lymphedema in the primary stage as well, it can still be treated effectively so that the patient enjoys a normal lifestyle.

Primary lymphedema treatment usually involves complete decongestive therapy. CDT is a three tier treatment which requires lymph drainage massages, compression garments and appropriate exercises. This process helps to reduce swellings and maintain the benefit from the reduction in fluid buildup so that the patients limb can reutrn to a normal size.

Primary lymphedema treatment mainly focuses on non invasive methods. Treatments such as acupunture which cause wounds to the skin are dangerous for lymphedema sufferers as it opens a gate way for bacteria to enter the body and cause infections. Also, stay clear of activites which can damage the skin of the affected limb as once the skin is damaged and bacteria can enter, the risk of serious infection is high.

Lymphedema therapy will help reduce swellings but the patient must also be strict with themselves and continue treatment to help maintain any gains achieved. There are many patients who have turned their lives around through having a better understanding of this condition and how to effectively manage it.

Manula lymphatic drainage should be performed by specialists as it requires a specific technique which focuses on light, gentle strokes across the skin in the direction of the heart. If performed incorrectly thelymph channels may close and cause further swellings. Take note of what the therapist does so that you may repeat the specific technique required.
