Beware Of Fats Hidden In Some Foods

By Lester Kramer

Beauty and fitness are top priorities in our conscious-driven society. People are more proactive in terms of looking, feeling and being young. Males and females are both conscious of their diets and take it upon themselves to learn more on the kinds of food they should or should not eat, especially since there are many known foods that we believe are healthy, but turn out to contain hidden fats.

For example, they encourage us to eat fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids which is good for the heart.

Likewise, they also remind us that not all fish may be as healthy as we believe them to be. Eating sushi rolls made up of fish is great; but those containing unhealthy fats like cream cheese or mayonnaise, is understandably, not so great.

Further, they also point out that some sushi rolls contain cooked fish that is battered and fried. Anything fried is never healthy. The oils used in them eventually become bad cholesterol in our bodies.

Time and again, we have been advised against snacking heavily. Nevertheless, snacking on foods like crackers and dried fruits are considered okay. Lately however, dried fruits have been found to actually contain added calories because it is denser than fresh fruits and because of the sugar used in drying them.

Another recommended snack are granolas. They are especially healthy if they are home-made: some oatmeal, fruits and a bit of honey is way better than the commercially sold granolas that are high in sugar and calories.

For heavier meals, there are certain foods that are also not as fat-free as they are portrayed. Vegetable based patties or burgers is a concise example.

Though it is true that it contains far less fat and cholesterol than meat burgers, the component that binds the veggie patty together is actually made up of cheeses and dressings that are high in caloric content.

Hidden fats in common foods which we believe are good for us are a dime a dozen. Learning and researching the true health value of foods will help us look, feel and stay younger.
