Choosing The Perfect Natural Remedy For Coughing

By Lorene Akey

Colds and flu can happen any time of the year. These conditions are most common during times of cooler temperatures. Many different approaches can be used to improve symptoms. For many who do not want the side effects of other medication, natural cough remedies may be helpful.

Garlic tea can help to provide natural ingredients to strengthen the immune system. Garlic has both antibiotic and antiviral properties, so it works where medication may not. Crush 2-3 peeled cloves of garlic and simmer in 2 cups of water for about 15 minutes. Strain, sweeten with honey and add a pinch of cayenne pepper and some lemon juice.

A sweetener such as honey, brown sugar or stevia can be mixed with red onions to create a syrup that is soothing and tasty. To prepare the syrup, thinly slice a peeled onion horizontally. Leave the rings intact and place a layer in a bowl. Sprinkle with sweetener (if using stevia, remember it is naturally very sweet, so limit to small sprinkles. Continue to layer the onion and sweetener, using the entire onion. Allow to sit several hours to collect the syrup. Users will be surprised to find the flavor is not onion-like.

Raw honey can mix with fresh lemon juice to create a concoction that soothes sore throats and stops the coughing. Raw honey is filled with enzymes that naturally eliminate the virus and the bacteria. The lemon adds essential antioxidants and vitamins to give the immune system a boost. Mix juice from half a lemon with a quarter cup of honey and use as needed.

For at least nine centuries, Moms have been pushing chicken soup for colds and flu. The vegetables and chicken both have antioxidants that can relieve symptoms. Many people prefer the option of an all organic soup that does not contain pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones or other chemicals that do not encourage well being.

Mullein tea helps to relieve congestion caused by the flu and colds. This natural expectorant loosens trapped mucus while soothing sore throats. Steep mullein in boiling water for about ten minutes; sweeten using raw honey and use when needed to relieve symptoms. Sip throughout the day for continual relief.

During cold season, the family is going to need cough remedies. Colds and flu can cause a person to be miserable. When symptoms continue beyond a week or when the individual experiences a high fever, it is time to call the doctor. The normal cold can develop into more serious conditions, including bronchitis and pneumonia. Such illness can be life threatening without proper medical support.
