Women and Men Now Share Skin Care Products

By Jim Jawnson

You go to the restroom to use your favorite moisturizer or face-rinse and what do you see? An empty bottle, still dripping suspiciously. You go to your shaving lotion to prevent razor burn , and it too is on its last legs. It appears that the man in your life has been using your skin care products again.

What can you do? Introduce him to the emerging market of men's skin care products. Men's skin is different from women's, although similar in its basic structure. As such, it needs different products. Some of the differences include that men's hair is simpler, so it is easier for cutting hair. Also, men tend to start developing wrinkles in their skin at a later time in life than women do. The thickness of men's skin is more so than women's, and it is mostly tougher. Men's skin glands produce more oil than women's skin glands do, increasing the level of natural moisture men have on their faces.

Men's skin also is thicker than women's, making it tougher and somewhat more resilient. Further, the oil glands in men's skin produce more oil than women's, giving men more "natural" moisture. Because of differences such as these, it's clear that men and women have different health needs for their skin. Unfortunately, however, men's skin care products have been limited until recently.

More men are paying attention to their image and searching for skin care products. L'Oreal has recently developed the Men's Expert brand, an anti-aging product specifically tailored for men. Men's Expert products include an Active Defense System, or ADS, which works to improve skin toughness and help it recover from shaving irritation and razor burn.

Other products in the same line include Oil Controller, meant for younger men and teenagers seeking to lose some of the extra oils causing them to break out in acne on their face; Power Clean, a deep-cleansing face wash that still maintains natural moisture; and Vita Life, a face-firming and smoothing concoction for men coming into their late 40s and experiencing dryness.
